Carry-On (2024)

In the ongoing debate over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, Netflix’s new thriller Carry-On adds fuel to the fire. Like Die Hard, it’s set during Christmas and takes place at an airport, though it doesn’t have the iconic Bruce Willis to carry it to action movie greatness. While it might not be remembered as a Christmas classic, Carry-On is still a fun ride, offering a solid alternative to the countless subpar holiday films.

The film stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent stuck in a job he dislikes. Ethan’s life takes a dramatic turn when he learns he’s going to be a father. His girlfriend, Nora (Sofia Carson), encourages him to pursue his dreams of becoming a police officer. The stakes are raised when a mysterious villain, “Traveler” (Jason Bateman), takes Nora hostage, forcing Ethan to let a suspicious suitcase pass through security. The contents of the luggage lead to a high-stakes series of events, putting Ethan’s life, as well as his girlfriend and unborn child’s, at risk.

Supporting roles include Danielle Deadwyler as Detective Elena Cole, who investigates a murder that ties back to the airport, and Dean Norris as Ethan’s boss, Phil Sarkowski. Jason Bateman’s performance as Traveler stands out with his calm, almost carefree malevolence, while other performances, though competent, are secondary.

What makes Carry-On work is its ability to keep the tension high. While the action isn’t as intense as Die Hard, the film thrives on its pacing and the gripping conversations between Ethan and Traveler. However, the film’s ending feels somewhat unresolved, leaving some plot points dangling. Despite this, the writing remains serviceable but lacks standout moments or iconic lines.

Ultimately, Carry-On is a tense, entertaining popcorn flick. It won’t become a holiday classic, but it offers a solid watch for those craving a different kind of Christmas movie.
