The Meg Franchise So Far: A Quick Recap

The Meg franchise began in 2018 with the release of The Meg, a thrilling monster movie featuring a Megalodon, an ancient giant shark that terrorizes deep-sea explorers. The film was a massive success, grossing over $529 million worldwide, making a sequel all but inevitable. The Meg 2: The Trench came in 2023, upping the ante with more Megalodons, a giant octopus, and prehistoric sea creatures, but it saw a drop in box office numbers, grossing $397 million.

Despite the dip in earnings, fans and filmmakers alike are hoping for a third installment.

Is The Meg 3 Happening?

While there’s no official green light yet from Warner Bros., The Meg 2 director Ben Wheatley has expressed his hopes for a third movie. In an interview with Total Film, Wheatley stated, “There’s a lot more to explore in that world. It’s very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.” Wheatley also highlighted the importance of diverse, global teamwork, which resonated well with audiences and gave the franchise a unique flair.

The Cast: Who’s Coming Back?

If The Meg 3 is confirmed, we can expect a return of some familiar faces. Jason Statham is almost guaranteed to reprise his role as Jonas Taylor, the ultimate Meg-slayer. Joining him might be Shuya Sophia Cai, who played Meiying Zhang, and Page Kennedy, who portrayed DJ—both characters survived The Meg 2, and their storylines are far from over.

Also likely to return is Cliff Curtis, who’s been a staple in both films. However, there may be room for new characters and actors, as the franchise continues to evolve with fresh faces and thrilling encounters.

One exciting possibility? Jing Wu, who joined The Meg 2 as Jiuming Zhang, could return to add more depth to the action-packed narrative.

Plot Details: What Will The Meg 3 Be About?

At the end of The Meg 2, a major plot twist was revealed: Meg Haiqi, the pregnant Megalodon, will soon give birth to a new generation of Megs! This sets the stage for The Meg 3, where we’re likely to see even more Megalodons—perhaps even more terrifying than before. Expect these baby Megs to grow up fast and bring a whole new level of chaos.

In addition to the Megalodons, The Meg 3 could introduce other prehistoric sea creatures. The Meg 2 featured a giant octopus, which added an extra layer of danger. What other massive sea creatures might emerge from the depths in the third movie? Fans are hoping to see even more terrifying predators.

Drawing inspiration from the third book in Steve Alten’s The Meg series, which introduces a time jump of 18 years, The Meg 3 could follow suit and allow for the baby Megs to become full-fledged threats. The novel also introduces Michael Maren, Jonas’s rival, who owns a pet Meg—a storyline that could make its way to the big screen, increasing the stakes.

What’s Next? A Liopleurodon?

A significant twist in The Meg book series is the introduction of the Liopleurodon, another massive sea creature thought to be extinct. The Liopleurodon was teased in the third novel, and fans believe it could show up in The Meg 3 to take the action to even greater heights. With more creatures to face off against, The Meg 3 could be the ultimate underwater battle yet.

When Could We Expect The Meg 3?

There’s no official release date for The Meg 3, but if it were to begin filming in 2025, we could see it hit theaters by 2026. The Meg 2 had a 19-month production schedule, so a quicker turnaround for The Meg 3 could bring it to audiences much sooner than expected. Given the popularity of the franchise, the sooner a third movie is released, the better!
